Credit bureaus are rich sources of information and have great potential to mitigate many of the risks involved in low-income lending while promoting healthy portfolios for MFIs. Nevertheless, the costs for credit bureau development are high and often times require advanced technologies. If a network wants to explore the idea of getting more MFIs involved in using existing credit bureaus as a source of information, what are some ways to go about that? What steps have other networks taken to promote linkages between MFIs and existing credit bureaus? What have been networks’ experiences with private credit bureaus, especially those in Latin America?

Credit Bureau Panel - Asia Microfinance Forum

This is such a timely topic and network members in many countries where a microfinance credit bureau does not exist bring this issue to their newtork. In fact, SEEP in partnership with BWTP is organizing a panel on the role of microfinance associations in the development of credit bureaus during the Asia Microfinance Forum in Hanoi (August 26 – 29, 2008). SEEP will upload the summary of that panel to our website as soon as it becomes available.
