Who should attend?
The SMDP-NH has learning tracks for both those new to the microfinance field and for experienced practitioners who are seeking advanced financial management skill building. We also will offer a comprehensive two-week Pro-Poor Enterprise Development skills track for beginner and intermediate enterprise development professionals.
Who are the faculty?
The SMDP-NH faculty includes some of the most seasoned microfinance and enterprise development practitioner trainers in the field, including Hugh Allen, Jeff Ashe, Alejandro Escobar, Kadry Furany, Ann Gordon, Malcolm Harper, Jan Maes, Ellen Morris, Vinod Parmeshwar, Alexandra Snelgrove, Michael Spingler, Michael Swack, and Veronica Torres. Courses are designed using case studies, action plan development, collaborative problem solving, and ongoing communities of practice that keep practitioners connected and engaged after they leave the program and begin to put what they have learned into action.
Why are both microfinance and enterprise development courses offered?
Following the eleven-year successful track record of MDI, the SMDP brings a holistic view of development to the field at a time when commercialization and specialization often puts profits and corporate culture ahead of communities, entrepreneurs, and sustainable development policies and practices. SMDP students have a chance to learn across disciplines, meet practitioners from a broad range of experiences, and build a shared vision of people and community centered development.
What are tuition costs?
Students can enroll for one or two weeks of the SMDP-NH 2010. Tuition and is $1,400 for one week or $2,500 for two weeks. Room and board is extra, and both dormitory and hotel options are available at affordable rates.
The MasterCard Foundation will award up to five general microfinance practitioner scholarships and up to three Youth-Inclusive Financial Services focus scholarships. The SMDP-NH MasterCard scholarship application deadline is April 15, 2010. Apply for a scholarship here.
Can I earn academic credit for participation in the SMDP?
Yes, you can earn three graduate-level credits for participation in the full two weeks of the SMDP through the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore School of Business & Economics. Students who wish to earn academic credit must pay standard summer school graduate course fees. See additional information on the Registration and Cost page.
Where is the program offered?
The SMDP-NH is offered on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH, which is about an hour from Boston, close to beaches and the White Mountains, and about an hour flight to New York or Washington, DC.
Who is the sponsor of the SMDP NH?
The SMDP-NH is a program of the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, which conducts regional, national, and international policy research on vulnerable children, youth, and families and on sustainable community development. The institute gives policy makers and practitioners the timely, independent resources they need to effect change in their communities.
The University of New Hampshire was established in 1866 and is a land grant, sea grant, and space grant university that unites the spirit of discovery with the challenge of sustainability across its curriculum. The university puts sustainability into action through its Office of Sustainability and is nationally recognized as a sustainable learning community.
